Ryan : Men's Styling Question

"I'm a guy, I got my hair cut and styled to be short and a bit messy, but for the life of me I can't make it work like the stylist did. She used pomade, and then finished off with a bit of hairspray all around. In addition, she sprayed some into her hand and used that to do some details. TIPS? Seriously, I can't make this work at all, I don't get it." -Ryan

Hello Ryan, I have a few follow up questions, as well as some tips. How long ago was your hair cut? If it was more than a few weeks it's possible the style has grown out. Also, it's important to use products that are right for your hair/the style you want. There are a lot of pomades on the market, and they all work about the same, so if that's what your stylist used, I would recommend it. Once you have it, use about half a grape sized lump of it and rub it together on your hands to activate it. After you do that run your fingers against the grain of your hair that you want to be spiked, focusing on the root/base. This should give you the look you want, finish with some hairspray and use your fingertips to make it more piecy. It might help to hold your head upside down when you are applying pomade and spraying, to give more lift. If you want some more help include a picture so I can see exactly what you're working with. Hope this helps!

  1. Thanks for the help. It was cut close to a month ago so I'm getting due for a cut. I have thin hair, which is why we went with pomade. I'll try out what you suggested, thanks!

  2. I feel for Ryan. Whenever I get my hair cut and they style it there, it is never reproducible after that!!! Maybe these tips will help when I spike up (weak pun intended).
